Volunteers needed!
Day-to-day management of Quarry Wood falls to a committee of eight volunteers, assisted by members of Friends of Quarry Wood. However, on one off occasions we ask if members of the public would like to help.
This year we have welcomed people to help with tree planting, as happened when the wood was planted 20 years ago. We shall also be seeking help to have the wood looking its best just before the judges from the Devon Show visit. Some people take a pair of secateurs on their walk and/or pick up rubbish.
However, there are also opportunities to help off site with fund raising. If you have experience of making funding applications we would be delighted, as we have some major projects coming up if we can increase our funds. We also welcome help with refreshments for some of our events. Maybe you have a PR background and can come up with ideas for events, or graphics design skills.
We are always willing to consider helping young people who are doing their Duke Of Edinburgh Awards, or any student who is completing an environmental project that has a practical element. As a working wood, with number of additional environments we can offer opportunities for
students seeking to enhance their CVs and university applications. Our committee includes ex-teachers and an ecologist.
While we have regular work parties, normally on the second Saturday each month, we welcome volunteers who can give a minimum of time. Even a couple of sessions a quarter is gratefully received. Family groups can be accommodated.
The Woodland Committee is always looking for new volunteers to help with the above activities. Regular work parties meet at the Community Centre and then spend a couple of hours in the wood on whatever task needs to be done. The fund-raising events also need extra hands to spread the workload. We have a lot of fun as well as making what we hope is a useful contribution to the local environment and community life.
